Job Responsibilities:

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Counselor II (BHCII) is able to practice independently within the PHNTX integrated HIV medical and behavioral health care clinics and at other PHNTX facilities. The BHCII, is a key member of the care team as part of the medical home model, and identifies, triages, and manages patients with mental health and/or substance misuse disorders.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes bio-psychosocial assessments and diagnoses for individuals who screen positive for mental health and/or substance misuse disorders.
  • Develops a therapeutic treatment plan in collaboration with the patient. 
  • Provides evidence based individual or group psychotherapy to address mental health and/or substance misuse disorders.
  • Works with the psychiatric and medical providers to promote clients’ adherence to treatment regimens, and informs them of barriers and concerns.
  • Reviews and evaluates patients’ progress in relation to measurable goals described in treatment plan.
  • Provides necessary crisis intervention.
  • Provides brief, focused intervention for clients who are in need of mental health services.

  • Develops and conducts evidence based psycho-education group sessions as required.
  • Accesses supervision appropriately and regularly apprises behavioral health director about client concerns, problem areas and grievances and other challenges.
  • Follows PHNTX and program protocols, completes accurate and timely documentation of client encounters in electronic health record and other databases and submits all necessary reports to behavioral health director on time.
  • Promotes integration of behavioral health care with outpatient HIV medical care and services, Community and Client Services programs and with the contracted Psychiatric Service Providers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently (without the need for clinical supervision) to provide evidence based psychotherapy and treatment for mental health and substance misuse disorders.
  • Ability to diagnose mental health and substance misuse disorders based on clinical assessments.
  • Ability to conduct individual and group psychotherapy sessions.
  • Ability to work in a positive and empathetic manner with persons living with HIV.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with clients.
  • Ability to work effectively with medical and other service providers.
  • Ability to provide supervision and guidance to staff when necessary.
  • Working knowledge of HIV and psychiatric medications and psychosocial complexities of HIV and co-occurring mental health and substance misuse disorders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written formats.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Word software applications including Excel.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and auto insurance.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Current State of Texas licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
  • Master’s degree in social work or Ph.D. in psychology.
  • Experience working with low-income clients, people living with HIV, and LGBTQ community.
  • Professional experience with trauma, depression, anxiety disorders, medical disability, cognitive impairment and substance abuse.
  • Bilingual in Spanish highly is highly desirable.
